Family Get-together

On Saturday a number of my family members got together at a state park near Castle Rock, Colorado for a mini reunion. It was so much fun to see everyone and talk and talk and talk. We had lots of fried chicken (not homemade but really good), green beans, pasta salad, fruit, chips, salsa, brownies, seafood salad, and cold soft drinks.

A minor highlight for me was the breaking of my full plate of food which landed on the ground in front of me. A sad, sad situation. I picked up the chicken and ate it anyway...I think this horrified Kay, but I'm still alive two days later (however, I do now have a twitch, a rash, and a speech impediment).

We did a lot of teasing. Some people had a lot of fun poked at them, which was better than a stick. My husband, who doesn't do a lot of talking at these things, had the most fun made of him especially by my brother. I made a lot of smart remarks, as did others. The remarks probably only seemed smart to the remarkers. But still a good time.

The list of those who were there included my two aunts and one of the husbands, my brother and his wife, his oldest son and his wife (they were just married a few months ago), my brother-in-law, my cousin, her daughter for awhile, my husband, son and me. And, oh yes, my uncle's dog Hairy--a girl dog who was quite nice. I guess I should mention a few other attendees: many mosquitoes and wasps. We missed Jen and the other nieces and nephews.

We were supposed to meet at 10:00am, but nearly everyone got there late. My family was the latest, arriving after 11:00. We had many reasons for being late, but they are too numerous and too lame to mention. We did have time after our arrival to talk for three hours nonstop. Then my husband was needing to get home. And if you say nearly everything in three hours, then you have to start meddling or you have to start over. The rule is, leave while everyone is still smiling!!

I loved being with all these lovely people. Who cares more about you than your family? I'm always sorry my mom and my sister aren't there. In Heaven, I don't know if we will get to sit and talk with people or not. Our whole motivation and desire may change.

My husband was in a good mood even though he didn't talk much. My son had quite the conversation with several people. The men tried to stay on one side of the circle, but they couldn't quite get away from the women. I didn't get to talk very much to my brother or nephew. Maybe next time.

Every time we get together as a family we discuss who the bosses are. The trouble is, many of us are bosses, but over time we've tried to tone it down. My brother declared he was taking a break and wasn't going to be bossing. He did, however, decide when it time to pray so we could eat. That was a really good thing. Being the delicate flower that I am, I have to push myself to boss others, and I succeed really well! No one was too bossy Saturday. Just the right amount of bossing.

I love getting together with other women. We all remember things like wipes--both cleaning and bug types-- tablecloths, paper towels, toilet paper, ice and more ice, trash bags, and extra chairs. The men carry things and set them up and take orders, I mean requests pretty well.

Anyway, I look forward to doing it again at Thanksgiving.

Potluck and Sandwiches

At my church we have a potluck once a month. I enjoy it because I sometimes make recipes that my family won't necessarily eat but ones that I like and I think others will like. For the potluck tomorrow I am making a Mexican casserole (Paula Dean's from a show I saw a couple of weeks ago) and pasta salad (curly pasta, olives, pepperoni, green onions, tomatoes, maybe cucumbers, low fat Italian dressing). I will make some especially for my husband because he doesn't like olives. And for dessert there will be brownies. Of course brownies are my son's favorite, so I will let him have one or two before I take them to church.

There is one man at church who usually likes at least one of my recipes...a lot. I really never think of myself as being a very good cook, but somehow what I make always appeals to him. Maybe his wife's cooking is bland.

One Thursday night this summer we had a hamburger/hot dog cookout at church and nearly all of the women brought beans as a side dish. They were all good, but we usually have more of a variety. For my beans I took canned Bush's Baked Beans and added 1/4 to 1/2 cup of salsa. Well, the man who likes my cooking thought they were really good.

I'm also slow-cooking a pork roast for our supper tonight. I've added a little barbecue sauce for flavoring. We will have pulled pork sandwiches. Sounds good to me.

Just a reminder that a blog is not just about writing things that are interesting to others. Sometimes I have to write about the mundane. But it makes me happy.

Stuff in Your Teeth

I always hate to find out at the end of the day that I have food pieces in my teeth and none of my really good friends, co-workers, or family members thought to tell me about it. This makes me feel betrayed, unloved, and mean in my heart. Sometimes it's actual pieces of food. Sometimes it's little bits of black pepper in the crevasses of several teeth. This makes one's mouth a thing of great beauty.

Several years ago I was selling House and Lloyd Toys and Gifts in Canon City. I had gone to the house of a women to have a party and demonstrate the items for sale. After I got there the hostess continued working on something in another room while we were waiting for guests to arrive. Well, we waited a long time before anyone came.

The hostess had a little girl I had met before. I already knew she was pretty strong-willed and liked to have things her way. Well, she and I were waiting together in the living room. The refreshments were already set up and they were Oreo Cookies. The little girl really wanted me to eat some cookies while we were waiting. I told her I didn't want to because it would cause me to have black stuff in my teeth. Well, over and over she told me to go ahead and eat some cookies, that I wouldn't have black stuff in my teeth.

Finally I went ahead and ate a cookie or two. I worked diligently at making sure I didn't have any black stuff. I don't know if I did or not. I do believe that little pushy girl probably wouldn't have told me if I had anything in my teeth. I think maybe I should just have left all the black stuff and been a raving (as in lunatic) beauty.

One time for Halloween I had bought some really ugly crooked teeth to wear. Our church had a Harvest Festival in a building at the Fairgrounds. A group of ladies and I were singing a special for the program. The program was mostly goofy, and I think the song we sang was goofy. I was also playing the keyboard and only singing on the chorus. My mouth was shut until it was time for me to sing, so people couldn't really tell that I had the teeth in. Keep in mind most of the children were sitting right up in front of the stage where we were singing. As soon as I opened my mouth, they were shocked and awed by my teeth. They stared the whole time at me. Later after the program was over, one of the little kids came up to me and said, "Those aren't real," as if I had been trying to pretend they were, but I didn't fool him!

When Jen was little, her dad used to let food be in his teeth or hang out of his mouth. This would drive Jen wild. She couldn't stand it, but the rest of us laughed with great enthusiasm at her. I think she would still react the same way today.

Having stuff in your teeth isn't all good, but it's not all bad either.
